Lawn and Eyelet

This is a very old dress possibly from the 1800’s. It is in remarkably good condition to be so old, no holes, stains or tears. It has an old paper attached that reads: two dresses belong to Mary Ann Durell (Polly) McGlasson 1845-1905. So it had to have been some place in that range. It has tiny buttons on the…

Neu Gablonz

I recently purchased this pin at a flea market in Bavaria. The lady had a large collection of this rhinestone jewelry. She explained to me that these Czech crystal rhinestones were once produced in Gablonz, Czechoslovakia. At the end of the war, many of the inhabitants of the area fled the region and relocated in an area of Germany that…

Winter Ball Gown

The gown was borrowed by Harper’s Bazaar to be photographed for their tribute article to the V&A’s “Golden Age of Couture” exhibition, it was photographed but not published, as only a small number of pieces were illustrated in the [October] edition. Norman Hartnell was born in 1901. At a very early age it was clear that he had a great…

Stetson Derby

This vintage Stetson hat was sold by The Carlson Company in Britain (see above gold embossed stamp in leather band). I found an interesting tidbit online which referred to the Carlson Company as the place where Humphrey Bogart bought his signature fedoras. After seeing similar labels, I think this hat was most likely manufactured sometime before 1940. You can see…
